Genesis vinyl has been well documented over the years, as there are books on 7” singles, catalogs of LPs, and vinyl price guides in magazines. But very little has been written about Genesis tapes. Even the word “tape” can mean so many things, from cassettes to 8-tracks to reels to video…there are literally endless Genesis tapes, both official and unofficial. Tapes are also fairly cheap to produce, so many companies in different countries produced vastly different tapes, with different content and designs.

Because of this, it is often impossible to pinpoint exact countries, companies, official/unofficial, or release dates but some educated guesses can be made. For example, most early releases were a plastic opaque tape with a paper label, printing on the tape itself came a little later, while transparent tapes did not arrive until the late 1980s/1990s. Countries such as the US, Canada, and UK did not see many unofficial releases, while countries like Indonesia and Poland were mostly unofficial. This does not mean inferior or not valuable, as many unofficial releases are more valuable and more interesting than the official releases.

It would be impossible to document every version of every tape that’s ever been made, so as always The Genesis Museum has focused on the harder to find and most interesting tapes.
