An interesting story for poster collectors maybe, thanks to Davide Castellini over at The Peter Gabriel Community page.
This photograph by Rich Engler was supposedly taken at the Pittsburgh Alpine Arena in 1973, a concert he also booked/promoted. But I thought this was impossible since the photo is used on the well-known concert poster design promoting the show.
But the photo isn't likely from an earlier show either since Rich had never really heard of Genesis at the time and had to be convinced by their agent to book them. He was mostly interested in Lou Reed and told me he paid Genesis only $500 for their appearance.
The first clue to the answer is that this was never a "Genesis with special guest Lou Reed" tour, it was always "Lou Reed with special guest Genesis".
But to confirm what I suspected, I asked Rich himself and he said "Genesis was virtually/almost completely unknown at the time and it was a Lou Reed (Transformer) concert/show...The poster is fake. It's a knock off...This guy was such a thief. His name was [removed], and tried to knock off everything that I did and it was horrible."
So I was wrong and Rich's photo *is* from this show and the poster is...well, let's just say it was made long after the show occurred, after Genesis was a much bigger band. It was never a true "concert poster" design promoting the show.
Also, the show itself is sometimes documented as April 13th and sometimes as March 13th. A fun part about collecting is that we learn something new all the time 🙂
