Piccolo article Italy April 12, 1972. Translation (with quote "the mind and leader of the quintet, Tony Banks"):
IN CONVERSATION WITH THE POPULAR ENGLISH GROUP
Refinement and vision in the music of Genesis
Meeting with Genesis, the popular Anglo-Saxon band that, due to unavoidable circumstances, was unable to perform its pop show at the Paradiso dance hall last Saturday. These stars of the pop firmament were very disappointed not to have been able to share their unique sound with their fans and the countless admirers of “new music” who had flocked from all over the region to see them perform.
The band, formed in 1966, consisted of drummer Phil Collins and lead guitarist Steve Hackett, two musicians who joined the Genesis cast in 1970, and then the three protagonists of the band, bassist Mike Rutherford, vocalist and excellent flutist Peter Gabriel, and finally the mind and leader of the quintet, Tony Banks, a true instrumental jack-of-all-trades who plays the organ, piano, and mellotron perfectly. Tony opens the interview by recalling how they entered the limelight of pop music as songwriters, authors of songs tailor-made for the big names on the English scene at the time.
"Unsatisfied with these experiences, we decided to record a test LP with our best pieces, hoping that these musical expressions could be disseminated and understood in their genuine intrinsic value by a wider audience."
“There has been a significant evolution in our musical style,” emphasizes pop singer Peter Gabriel, "because at the beginning we expressed a sound based on the prevailing rock ‘n’ roll, for which we were often accused of copying the successful style of the Beatles.
But it's clear that no band is born with a completely original style. Through countless jam sessions, we personalized our performances, developing them according to our own way of feeling and interpreting music. Our “feeling,” conveyed in the lyrics and scores, has a certain label of refinement that evokes evocative atmospheres and visions, a musical color that fascinates the “new generation.”
The discography of these pop idols, who occupy tenth place among LPs on the Italian market with their latest effort, Nursery Cryme, consists of a number of singles and three 33 rpm albums.
